About Seiko
In 2023, Seiko celebrates the 110th anniversary of its first wristwatch, the Seiko Laurel. The SPB495J1 is designed to be a travelling companion, a reliable partner throughout life's journey.
A Presage that pays homage to a historic Seiko model, the Timekeeper pocket watch from 1895. The pure white enamel, the result of Mitsuru Yokosawa's master craftsmanship, together with the railway-style minute scale, black Roman numerals and curvilinear blue hands, enhance the vintage style of this timeless piece.
Equipped with the 6R5H mechanical movement, the new Presage SPB495J1 offers a 72-hour power reserve and a 24-hour subdial. The black leather strap is sourced from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group, a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable and responsible production.
For nearly half a century, Mitsuru Yokosawa has been pushing the boundaries of enamel, mastering traditional techniques and gradually creating new ones. Thanks to his long experience, the layers of enamel he could apply became increasingly thinner. He is now able to apply a flawless layer of enamel just 0.1 mm thick. This precision requires not only exceptional visual acuity, but also the almost magical ability to make minute adjustments to the enamel composition according to fluctuations in humidity and weather conditions. It is no wonder that the skills of a magician are needed to create the dial of the new Seiko Presage.
*This enameled watch dial is made by high-temperature firing. The enamel melting process can create small indentations, tiny dots and a rough surface. These attributes are unique to genuine enamelled watch dials, of which no two are exactly alike
About Seiko:
Follow your dreams and keep moving forward is the philosophy of Seiko founder Kintaro Hattori.
Fascinated by Swiss watchmaking, Kintaro dreams of becoming a great high-level watchmaker and at just 18 years old he sets up a watch repair shop in his own home in Kyobashi (Ginza district). Four years later he establishes the K Hattori company for repairs and sale of second-hand watches. In 1892, he creates the company Seikosha (“house of precision”) making his own wall clocks and creates the first pocket watch, called “Time Keeper” in 1895 or the first Japanese-made alarm clock. In 1913 he creates the first wrist watch called “Laurel”. His dream of being a true watchmaker becomes a reality. But the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 destroyed everything. Time does not stand still, it moves forward. Hattori started all over again, a year later he was making his wristwatch again, this time under the Seiko brand. He rebuilt the clock tower in Ginza in 1932, symbolising the rebirth of Seiko and the city of Tokyo itself.
Moving forward, step by step: Since its creation, Seiko has been advancing, evolving in technology and science applied to watchmaking with its collections: Astron, Prospex, Presage, 5 Sports, Premier. “It is always one step ahead of the rest”
