About the Seiko SPB473J1 Prospex Limited Edition watch

Seiko presents the Prospex collection inspired by the white sandy beaches and clear blue waters of the Greek Ionian Islands. The gradient dial is an image of those crystal-clear waters

The 1965 diving watch featured an automatic mechanical calibre and offered a water resistance of 150m. The watch was designed for maximum reliability and legibility in the harshest conditions. It proved its reliability when used in Antarctica during the 1960s and paved the way for the development of future iconic watches. The current SPB473j1 is powered by calibre 6R35 and is water-resistant to 200m.

The power and beauty of crystal-clear waters are perfectly captured on the patterned dial that evokes gentle ripples of the sea with intricate patterns. The rich heritage of the 1965 diving watch is represented in the gradient blue colour of the dial of the SPB473j1.

About Seiko:

Follow your dreams and keep moving forward, this is the philosophy of the founder of Seiko: Kintaro Hattori.

Fascinated by Swiss watchmaking, he dreams of becoming a great high-level watchmaker and at just 18 years old he opens a watch repair shop in his own home in Kyobashi (Ginza district). Four years later he establishes the K Hattori company for repairs and sale of second-hand watches. In 1892, he creates the firm Seikosha (“house of precision”) manufacturing his own wall clocks and creates the first pocket watch, called “Time Keeper” in 1895 or the first Japanese-made alarm clock. In 1913 he creates the first wrist watch called “Laurel”. His dream of becoming a true watchmaker is a reality. But the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 destroyed everything. Time does not stop, it moves forward. Hattori started all over again, a year later he was making his wristwatch again, this time under the Seiko brand. He rebuilt the clock tower in Ginza in 1932, symbolizing the rebirth of Seiko and the city of Tokyo itself.

Moving forward, step by step. Seiko has been advancing, evolving in technology and science applied to watchmaking. In 1969, Astron was the first quartz watch. In the 70s, Seiko looked for alternatives to quartz with solar technology and later there will be the kinetic watch, the Direct Drive movement, the Chronograph, Perpetual Calendar, GMT, Astron GPS Solar (2012), the Diver’s watches and its diving watches. At the end of the 90s, they created the Grand Seiko collection with large mechanical calibres such as the 9S and shortly after, perfection with the Spring Drive system combined with all these advances and more.

“It is always one step ahead of the others”, Kintaro Hattori, founder of Seiko.
